CITY SLICKERS is the story of African penguins and people competing for suburban habitat. Seabird and human share beaches, streets - sometimes even bedrooms!
Two penguins, our central characters, meet and form a lifetime bond early in this story. Life's challenges can be tough - the hot African sun, predatory seals and Great White sharks, egg thieving gulls and mongooses, crowded living quarters, and devastating winter storms. But their toughest challenge is human.
Nesting space is short on the beach, so enterprising penguins move into town - trespassing in hotels, private pools, hothouses, the golf course. They scale walls, stroll through bars, stop traffic. At night their donkey-like braying under the residents' windows brings many a sleepless night. Simultaneously scourge of suburbia, and much-loved entertainer.
June, mid-winter - the hardest penguin challenge yet: a massive oil spill threatens to annihilate the species. Forgetting former differences, humans mount history's biggest seabird rescue.
Emotionally-charged images show how 45,000 African penguins were snatched from death's door. Penguin lovers and haters alike applaud the CITY SLICKERS' release to the wild and freedom.
